This book chronicles the evolution and progress of village elections in China, and offers a roadmap as to what could eventually be the beginning of a more extensive liberalization and democratization process. China's dramatic economic growth in such a short period of time was mostly due to the economic reforms initiated by Deng Xiaoping in the late 1970s, and thus lifted 200 million people out of poverty. It is worthy to note that this change began with the "household responsibility system" that was initiated in the countryside, permitting peasants to farm their own land.
