Description

This volume presents the multi-generational and cross-cultural contributions of the Protestant missionary William Arnot Mather and his son, Richard Mather who served for over forty years as Professor of Chinese Studies at the University of Minnesota. William Mather, the missionary father, developed a system of transcribing the Bible into Chinese phonetic script. He spent his lifetime completing a phonetic Chinese Bible Dictionary. William Mather's son, Professor Richard Mather, continued his father's linguistic and cultural work by developing Chinese language and cultural literacy at the University of Minnesota for more than forty years.
