Description
In October 1966 in Nottingham, William Lavery is celebrating his graduation as the youngest embalmer in the country just as an urgent call comes in. A horrific mine collapse in Aberfan has engulfed the local primary school and they are asking for volunteers. Many children are among the dead and they desperately need embalmers.
William doesn't hesitate for a second and he sets off for Wales with his embalming gear and child-size coffins. But what he hasn't taken into account in his rush to help is the level of horror he will witness and how much this will affect his life.
His work that night forces him to think about the little boy he was and the losses he has worked so hard to forget. But compassion can have surprising consequences because giving so much to others can sometimes help us heal ourselves.
A heartwarming and incredibly moving debut novel from Jo Browning Wroe.
