Jennette McCurdy was always destined to be a star but not because she necessarily wanted it, but because her mother did. Her mother's dream was for her only daughter to become a star and Jennette would do just about anything to make her mother happy.
From going along with the 'calorie restriction' her Mum put into place to weighing herself fives times a day, suffering endless and extensive home makeovers, eyelash tinting, and being showered by her mother until the age of 16 - you name it she did it. She even shared all of her income.
In I'm Glad My Mom Died, Jennette recounts all this in unflinching detail - just as she chronicles what happens when the dream finally comes true. Cast in a new Nickelodeon series called iCarly, she was thrust into fame. Her Mum was obviously ecstatic, emailing fan club moderators and getting on first-name terms with the paps, while Jennette was riddled with anxiety, shame and self-loathing.
She spiralled into addiction, eating disorders and a series of unhealthy relationships, issues that only got worse when, soon after taking the lead in the iCarly spinoff Sam & Cat alongside Ariana Grande, her mother died of cancer.
I'm Glad My Mom Died is an inspiring story of resilience, independence, and the joy of shampooing your own hair.
