Richard & Judy Review Cat Lady by Dawn O'Porter

Richard & Judy Introduce Cat Lady by Dawn O’Porter

They say a cat always lands on its feet – but will that be the case for Mia? Mia is the dedicated step-mum and loyal wife, but most definitely devoted above all to Pigeon, her cat. A shocking event will judder shockwaves through Mia’s life – but will she keep a cat-like balance, or flounder? Dawn O’Porter’s trademark humour, irony and sexual bite is laced through these pages. Enjoy. We did.

Richard's Review:

You’re either a cat person, or you’re not. If not, that doesn’t necessarily mean you prefer dogs. Maybe you’re indifferent to both species. But cat people definitely belong in a particular (forgive the slight pun here) category. They enjoy their pet’s magnificent, almost insolent independence, in a way dog people don’t.

So to Mia and Pigeon. Mia is a good wife to husband Tristan, a genuinely loving and caring step-mum to his kids by his last marriage, and very good at her job. But it quickly becomes apparent to us that the number one relationship in her life is with Pigeon – her beloved, elderly, cat. (Pigeon is 16. That’s ancient, in cat chronology). For Mia, Pigeon takes precedence over pretty much everything – including sleeping with Tristan.

Judy's Review:

This is a great story. It’s all too easy to give plot spoilers away in these reviews, so I’ll restrict myself merely to saying that after a few chapters, Mia is faced with a life choice brought about by a shattering event that tears open the superficially conventional life she’s been leading thus far. Before that, we are treated to her almost weirdly intimate relationship with Pigeon. ‘I lean down to her so she can rub her face on mine. We do it over and over, her purrs becoming louder, my eyes crossing a little… my girl. My very important girl.’ Well, you see what I mean? It IS a bit weird. But it’s funny, and compelling, and warm. It certainly made us purr.
